Preparing Synology NAS
Virtual Machine Manager (VMM)
Ensure you've installed the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) package
Check NFS Version
Ensure NFSv4.1 is enabled
PBS Service Account
We'll create a service account for use with CIFS in case you prefer that option. In a later step, however, I'll be using NFS, which doesn't require a user credential.
Group
Open Control Panel > User & Group > Group > Create
We haven't created the service account yet, so skip when prompted to add members.
Assign Read/Write to the shared folder created before
You can assign No Access to any other shared folders you wish to deny access to
Leaving all unchecked, as I'll be configuring NFS permissions on the shared folder
User
Open Control Panel > User & Group > Create user
Set a strong password and save in your password manager
Assign to PBS_Users group created before
Read/Write Permissions already inherited from group
Shared Folder
Create the Shared Folder
Open Control Panel > Shared Folder
Recommended to disable the Recycle Bin, so that deleted chunks don't take up space
Skip encryption, as PBS can encrypt the backups
IronWolf HDD are formatted with Btrfs, therefore support checksums
Skip compression, since PBS already compresses backups
